Bowling lane booking spreadsheet vs a lane booking app

Updated October 26, 2026 · For independent bowling centers

Independent bowling centers often take reservations into a spreadsheet: lanes across the top, half-hour slots down the side, a party name in each cell. It is quick to see the evening and easy to print for the desk.

The grid has no idea who confirmed, whether the end time overlaps the league starting at 7, or that the birthday party wanted bumpers. Here is how to make a booking sheet work, and how it compares with a booking board.

A booking sheet that holds up

  • One tab per night, lanes as columns, times as rows.
  • Block league lanes first, before taking open bookings.
  • In each booking: party name, phone, number of bowlers, start and end time.
  • A status: held, confirmed or cancelled. Color is not enough; write it.
  • Notes for bumpers, cake or a party room.

Where it slips

  • Overlaps when an end time is typed wrong or a booking runs long.
  • Held lanes that were never confirmed, discovered at 6:55pm.
  • No reminder, so parties forget.
  • Two people at the desk editing the same file.

When the spreadsheet is enough

If most of your lanes are walk-in and you take a handful of reservations a week, a printed grid at the desk is fine. A booking board pays off with parties, groups and leagues sharing the same nights, and more than one person taking calls.

Common questions

Can customers book lanes online?
Not yet. Your desk enters bookings, and each party gets a booking page they can check and confirm.
Does it run our scoring system?
No. LaneLineup handles bookings and leagues, not scoring or lane control.
